and prospective/current/enrolled master students in the fields of modern mathematics and computational science:
Functional and Numerical Analysis
September 3-12th, 2018
The Institute of Computational Science (ICS) at the University of Lugano announces an intensive course from September 3rd to 12th in Lugano, Switzerland.
The course is supported and organized by the Swiss Graduate School FOMICS - "Foundations in Mathematics and Informatics for Computer Simulations in Science and Engineering”, which is located at ICS.

Existence theory for linear problems

(Hilbert spaces, Lax-Milgram theorem, Galerkin discretization, linear elliptic PDEs)

Nonlinear theory based on contractions

(Banach fixed-point theorem, a priori and a posteriori error estimates, 2nd order elliptic PDEs)

Iterative solution methods for nonlinear problems

(General fixed point iterations, Newton type schemes, Kačanov iteration for quasi-linear elliptic PDEs)

Domain decomposition methods

(abstract Schwarz framework, stable decomposition estimates, interface conditions)
